Overview:Many people, including friends, ask us which anti-virus or anti-spy-ware they should use. For individual PCs it is a no-brainer, any of the top ones, Symantec, McAfee, TrendMicro and CA's Anti-VIrus products will do, as long as the anti-virus signatures are kept up to date and the software is run on a daily/weekly basis depending on the servers or machines availability. But, for a company the recommendation is a little more complex. For example, a company that has Exchange servers, file servers, and obviously desktops should have at least two different types of anti-virus software. Why two you ask? The recommendation is to use one to scan and protect the e-mail server, Exchange in this example, and the other to protect the file servers and the desktops. By having two anti-virus scanners running cuts down the chances that one might be affected by a virus targeting one of them. Also, some companies come out with anti-virus signatures sooner than others, this also helps in cutting down the chances of getting a virus into any laptop, desktop or server. Here are an up-to-date listing of Anti-virus alerts from their respective vendors, Symantec, Computer Associates and TrendMicro:
Anti-virus/spyware for e-mailSome of the more powerful e-mail and instant messaging anti-virus software use a combination of different engines from different software vendors to catch anti-viruses and spam e-mails in attachments as well as in the e-mail. One of these software applications is GFI. GFI can use multiple engines to guard your system against viruses and spamming. CompuLogiX has experience in implementing the GFI products and can help your company in evaluating any of GFI's products. We can also help you in the decision making process if you are not sure which software or application is best for your needs. |
